Microwave Background Signals from Tangled Magnetic Fields

چکیده
An inhomogeneous cosmological magnetic field will create Alfvén-wave modes that induce a small rotational velocity perturbation on the last scattering surface of the microwave background radiation. The Alfvén-wave mode survives Silk damping on much smaller scales than the compressional modes. This, in combination with its rotational nature, ensures that there will be no sharp cut-off in anisotropy on arc-minute scales. We estimate that a magnetic field which redshifts to a present value of 3× 10 Gauss produces temperature anisotropies at the 10μK level at and below 10 arcmin scales. A tangled magnetic field, which is large enough to influence the formation of large scale structure is therefore potentially detectable by future observations.

Cosmic microwave background polarization signals from tangled magnetic fields.
Tangled, primordial cosmic magnetic fields create small rotational velocity perturbations on the last scattering surface of the cosmic microwave background radiation. For fields which redshift to a present value of B0 = 3 x 10(-9) G, these vector modes are shown to generate polarization anisotropies of order 0.1-4 microK on small angular scales (500<l<2000), assuming delta function or a power l...
متن کاملSmall-scale microwave background anisotropies due to tangled primordial magnetic fields
An inhomogeneous cosmological magnetic field creates vortical perturbations that survive Silk damping on much smaller scales than compressional modes. This ensures that there is no sharp cut-off in anisotropy on arc-minute scales. As we had pointed out earlier, tangled magnetic fields, if they exist, will then be a potentially important contributor to small-angular scale CMBR anisotropies. Seve...
متن کاملSmall-scale CMB polarization anisotropies due to tangled primordial magnetic fields
Tangled, primordial cosmic magnetic fields create small rotational velocity perturbations on the last scattering surface (LSS) of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). Such perturbations can contribute significantly to the CMBR temperature and polarization anisotropies at large l > 1000 or so, like the excess power detected by the CBI experiment. The magnetic contribution can be dis...
متن کاملCMB Anisotropy Due to Tangled magnetic fields in re-ionized models
Primordial tangled cosmological Magnetic Fields source rotational velocity perturbations of the baryon fluid, even in the post-recombination universe. These vortical modes inturn leave a characteristic imprint on the temperature anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), if the CMB photons can be re-scatterred after recombination. Observations from WMAP indicate that the Universe unde...
متن کاملSynchrotron and inverse-Compton emission from radio galaxies with non-uniform magnetic field and electron distributions
I investigate the effect of non-uniform magnetic fields in the extended structures of radio galaxies on the observed synchrotron and inverse-Compton emission. On the assumption of an isotropic field, with a given power spectrum and a Gaussian distribution of the Cartesian components of the magnetic field strength, I derive a simple integral that can be used numerically to calculate the synchrot...
